Photo fanatics earn a blue ribbon prize, with this 1930 Blue Ribbon Malt Chicago Cubs partial set of (18/29). Issued during the "Prohibition" era by a beer company reduced to selling ingredients only, these handsome photos are believed to have been made available as mail-in redemption premiums. Sized at 5x7, with facsimile signatures printed over player images, these antique photographs are mounted on 6-1/4 x 8-5/8" gray backers, that are styled with a faux leather grain surface. Given the delivery method by U.S. Mail, and their age of nearly one hundred years, these prized premiums have held up remarkably well, with only a couple showing any more than minimal wear.
A quartet of Hall of Famers are among the most attractive of the group, with Rogers Hornsby, "Hack" Wilson, "Kiki" Cuyler, and "Gabby" Hartnett. While the photos show only slight to moderate signs of attrition, some of the backers bear readily detectable wear. These conditions will be fairly unobtrusive to display, and the stunning photos are clean and crisp, with sharp corners, white borders, nice gloss and distinct images. These ancient premiums are seldom seen as a complete team set, and this pleasing selection puts you two-thirds along the way towards completion of this significantly tough issue.
