Graded EX 5 by PSA. A standard of collecting excellence. The offered 1952 Topps Baseball #311 Mickey Mantle rookie card is one of the few cardboard treasures that transcends the sports collecting hobby and rightfully earns the limelight of broader national attention. Unlike so many of its peers, this particular high number escaped burial at the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and survives in the upper 68% of all similar copies validated by the third-party grading service. The time was right and the setting perfect. The youthful Oklahoman burst onto the New York scene just as Sy Berger introduced his “giant size picture cards” to a baseball-crazed public. As such, the majority of such examples when encountered are understandably well handled as few escaped the grasps of youthful collectors. With his head aloft, “The Mick” casts an upward glance while his weapon of choice rests upon his right shoulder. The instantly recognizable cardboard canvas is entirely absent of any creasing, surface abrasions, impressions or color loss. The reverse is clean. Superficial perimeter wear along with errant left-to-right centering is overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the overall design and the idol status of its subject.
