It took a few years (and the cancelation of the second scheduled World Series) before the American League was considered worthy of respect. As the “Junior Circuit” established itself with the game’s biggest stars and most dominant franchises, this OAL Johnson ball was autographed by some of the league’s most iconic performers. The orb is covered with a uniform layer of period shellac, under which (21) black ink signatures remain potent and readily identifiable. While the ball dates to 1918-1924, the scriptings were likely gathered by an American League enthusiast prior to the 1923 season, as rosters and tenures suggest. Includes: Sweet Spot: Babe Ruth and Harry Heilmann (signed “Harry E. Heilmann”); North Panel: Everett Scott, Stuffy McInnis (signed “J. McInnis”), Jimmy Austin (signed “Jas. P. Austin”), George Sisler, Steve O’Neill and unidentified; South Panel: Carl Mays, Harry Hooper, Tris Speaker, Coveleski and Howard Ehmke; West Panel: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Nick Altrock, Roger Peckinpaugh and Eddie Collins; East Panel: Ray Schalk, Cy Perkins (signed “Ralph Perkins”) and Joe Dugan. We note that while portions of most signatures have been traced/enhanced in an unknown hand, this remains an unusual gathering on a keepsake destined to headline any serious collection.
