As links collectibles go, this multi-signed cap carries immeasurable appeal in that it simultaneously hails from the first and long-awaited title for Phil Mickelson and a little-known tradition initiated by the famed Augusta course.
While not as familiar as the Green Jacket and the Claret Jug in the circles of golf traditions, Augusta National’s “Litter” cap is the incentive of area underprivileged youths. Hired and given uniforms to clean up the course for the prestigious Masters Tournament, the workers meet with tournament participants as they arrive for practice on Monday and have their caps autographed. Two days later, they stand outside the clubhouse and sell the caps to eager collectors and are allowed to keep the proceeds.
This particular cap was used in that endeavor before the 2004 tournament and subsequently autographed by (13) renowned golfers. Crafted by “American Needle,” the yellow adjustable accessory features “Litter” embroidered to the front center in green cursive. Surrounding are fiber tip autographed that resonate (“8-9”) potency on average. Includes: Rich Beem, John Daly, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Charles Howell III, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson (2004 Masters Champion), Mark O’Meara, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir and Tiger Woods.
