While his Civil War roles at Fort Sumter and Gettysburg were more definitive than his alleged “invention” of baseball, Abner Doubleday will forever be linked to the National Pastime as the diamond in Cooperstown bears his name. In the former, more documented capacity, Doubleday signed this keepsake. Measuring approximately 5-3/4 x 3” with rounded corners, the thick stock album page is dated “Nov. 13th 1879” and composed entirely in Doubleday’s hand. In black-ink steel tip fountain pen, Doubleday has signed (“9” strength) and inscribed “Mendham, N.J. – Bvt. Major General U.S. Army – late Major General of Vols.” Regardless of the validity of Doubleday’s links to baseball, his signature is among the rarest! Full photo LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve (estimated value: $1500-$2500)
